No where in the bible does it say that anger is a sin. Let’s start there.
Anger is a communicable attribute of God- which means it is a characteristic of God that we can possess. God has immense wrath and anger, and has given us the experience of that emotion as well.
That said, there is righteous and unrighteous anger.
God getsI angry, but does not sin, and commands the same of us. Some identifying questions you can ask yourself about your anger are:
Am I angry about how I have been wronged, or am I angry about how others are being wronged? If your anger is towards someone who you perceived has wronged you, it will destroy you if left undealt with. It is likely (but not always) unrighteous. If your anger is directed at corruption or injustices, it is very much Godly and righteous anger.
Righteous anger is what get people off the couch and into the game. We need more righteous anger in the Church today. Look around. There are plenty of injustices right here in Cincinnati, USA to get angry about.
How do you need to deal with your unrighteous anger? Try forgiveness.
On the other hand, what do you see around you that you can cultivate a righteous anger about?
